Climate‐Change Controls on River Delta Avulsion Location and Frequency

چکیده
Coastal rivers that build deltas undergo repeated avulsion events—that is, abrupt changes in river course—which we need to understand predict land building and flood hazards coastal landscapes. Climate change can impact water discharge, frequency, sediment supply, sea level, all of which could location frequency. Here present results from quasi-2D morphodynamic simulations delta-lobe construction explore how frequency are affected by relative regime. Model indicate sea-level rise drives more frequent avulsions occur at a distance the shoreline set backwater hydrodynamics. Reducing supply transport capacity has little on deltaic avulsions, because, despite incision upstream trunk channel, still aggrade as result progradation. However, increasing shift zone because aggradation channel outpaces progradation-induced delta aggradation. Increasing overbank floods causes less scour riverbed within zone, slowing net rates. Results provide framework assess downstream controls patterns over glacial-interglacial cycles, use anthropogenic climate deltas.

Testing morphodynamic controls on the location and frequency of river avulsions on fans versus deltas: Huanghe (Yellow River), China
A mechanistic understanding of river avulsion location and frequency is needed to predict the growth of alluvial fans and deltas. The Huanghe, China, provides a rare opportunity to test emerging theories because its high sediment load produces regular avulsions at two distinct nodes. Where the river debouches from the Loess Plateau, avulsions occur at an abrupt decrease in bed slope and reoccur...
متن کاملEcological and Toxicological Conditions in the Delta Volga River
The decrease in the level of industrial production and the significant reduction of highly toxic substances used in the agriculture of the Volga region in the last decade did not maintain the expected decrease of pollution level in the Volga water. Concentration of many polluting substances in water continues to remain high. Among the numerous polluting substances in the Volga River two groups ...
متن کاملModeling river delta formation.
A model to simulate the time evolution of river delta formation process is presented. It is based on the continuity equation for water and sediment flow and a phenomenological sedimentation/erosion law. Different delta types are reproduced by using different parameters and erosion rules. The structures of the calculated patterns are analyzed in space and time and compared with real data pattern...
متن کاملControls on gravel termination in seven distributary channels of the Selenga River Delta, Baikal Rift basin, Russia
The Selenga River Delta, Lake Baikal, Russia, is ~600 km2 in size and contains multiple distributary channels that receive varying amounts of water and sediment discharge. The delta is positioned along the deep-water (~1600 m) margin of Lake Baikal, a half-graben–styled rift basin, qualifying it as a modern analogue of a shelf-edge delta system. This study provides a detailed field survey of ch...
متن کاملSediment and rock strength controls on river incision into bedrock
Recent theoretical investigations suggest that the rate of river incision into bedrock depends nonlinearly on sediment supply, challenging the common assumption that incision rate is simply proportional to stream power. Our measurements from laboratory abrasion mills support the hypothesis that sediment promotes erosion at low supply rates by providing tools for abrasion, but inhibits erosion a...
